Q&A: Management Major – Makana S (3:06)

“I am a management major, and I chose this because growing up, especially in high school, I found that I really enjoyed taking leadership positions. Because of that, I found out that I really liked managing people. That’s why I decided to go into the management major.”

Why College

College is very important because it is a great way for you to develop your interests and get to learn more about what you’re really into. You’re able to explore more in college and really figure out what you’re passionate about because you can take so many different classes. And it’s so interesting because you get to meet so many different people, too, and it just helps you to expand your horizons and open your mind about what you can really do in life.

What I Love About College

My favorite part about going to college is that the people are incredible. I’m from Hawai’i, and being from Hawai’i, we’re a very small community. And so coming to San Francisco is so incredible because I get to meet people from other countries, and I get to meet people who are from this country but they have been to other countries. And I think that’s so cool because you get to learn about all the different perspectives and experiences that people have had over time.

Choosing a Major

It really comes down to what you’re most interested in. You just have to think about the most nitty-gritty parts of your life. So for me, like I’ve mentioned, I enjoyed leadership positions. And this was just a small thing of my life, but I realized that I really enjoyed that, so that’s what I stuck to. But at the same time, you are able to keep your mind open. Don’t think that you’re going to go into college and you’re just going to have this one thing, because you can always change your mind. And so that’s also what’s great about college; you can kind of play with your interests and see what you really enjoy.

Freshman Survival Tips

I stay productive by surrounding myself with productive people so that we can all kind of work together and do what needs to be done. Another thing is that, for me, I don’t like to stay in my dorm because I get distracted when I’m in my dorm because there’s people everywhere. Utilizing your library or somewhere more quiet is probably a better situation for you to be more productive because then you are able to get things done and then you can go back to your dorm or wherever you live. Talk to people around you, maybe older people if they have gone to college, and see what their college experience is like so you can kind of see what you’d be interested in doing. And to be honest, everyone’s college experience is different, so you can’t rely on one college story. You’re just going to have to wait for your own exciting journey.

Advice for Girls

I believe that every girl should at least consider going to college because this is a great opportunity for girls to really experience something different, because you can take a variety of classes and get to know yourself and know other people. And it really just provides you with a greater perspective of the world and how everyone participates in that.
