Topic: Extracurricular Activities

Empowerment Lesson Video: Why Extracurricular Activities

Supplies:

  • Extracurricular Activities Planner handout, one copy per student
  • Internet connected devices, one per student
  • Markers/pencils/pens

Video Discussion:

Ask students to define the term “extracurricular activities.”

After explaining that extracurricular activities are those activities that take place outside of the regular school day or the regular daily routine, have students name some extracurricular activities they are familiar with.

Tell students they will be watching the video Why Extracurricular Activities. Explain that the video presents role models talking about why extracurricular activities are valuable.

Use some or all of the following questions to discuss the video content:

  • What did the first role model in the video mean when she said that extracurricular activities help you feel confident and boost your self-esteem? Why are confidence and self-esteem important?
  • More than one role model said that extracurricular activities help you work well with other people. Why is it important to know how to work well with other people? Even if you prefer working alone, name one or two situations where you might have to work well with other people.
  • How can joining extracurricular activities help you “release energy” you may have stored up when sitting still, working on schoolwork? How can releasing such energy actually help you do better on your schoolwork?
  • What does it mean to be “well-rounded?” Why is it important to be well-rounded? How can extracurricular activities help you to become well-rounded?

Activity Instructions:

Students will continue exploring the importance of extracurricular activities by creating a personalized planner to track their activities, set goals, and manage their time effectively.

This activity will help students visually see how to balance school responsibilities with extracurricular activities.

Today, you’ll design your own extracurricular activity planner! You’ll create a schedule to keep track of clubs, sports, and hobbies while making sure you have time for schoolwork and fun. A good plan helps you stay organized and make the most of your time!

  1. Ensure you have a copy of the Extracurricular Activities Planner handout and a writing utensil.
  2. Use the back of your planner page to create a list of activities that you currently do or might enjoy doing such as art, music, dance, sports, or volunteer work.
  3. Then, use the planner handout to fill in your current schedule on the calendar. Be sure to include information on all the activities that you are currently a part of as well as consistent schoolwork such as monthly book reports or weekly tests.
  4. Use information at your school such as flyers or information you find online to research other extracurricular activities that you might be interested in from your list. Try to find out what days and times these activities happen.
  5. Consult your calendar and note which days you are free to try out a new extracurricular activity. Consider adding it to your calendar as a reminder to try some new things. You never know who you will meet or what new passion you will discover!
