Empowerment Lesson Video: Taking Initiative

Supplies:

  • Large poster board or paper, 1 or 2 depending on group size
  • Markers

Video Discussion:

Tell students they will be watching the video titled, Taking Initiative. Explain that the video presents role models talking about the power of taking initiative and creating opportunities.

Talk with students about the importance of giving back and what they think that means. After watching the video How Girls Can Give Back To Their Community, ask your students the following questions:

  • Can you provide an example of how others have given back to benefit you and your community?
  • What are some ways you can give back to your community?

Activity Instructions:

In the middle of the poster write in large letters “How can you give back to your community?” Ask your students to think of different ways they can give back to their community. Have them write their ideas on the poster in different colors. Tip: 10 students to 1 poster is a good ratio. Encourage students to be specific in their answers. Hang this poster up to remind students of ways they can give back.

Follow-up Activity:

Have students write down 3 things they can do to give back to their community. Encourage them to check off those items and try to achieve them within 2 weeks. Have students share what they did, how it benefited the community, and how giving back makes them feel.
