Storm In A Jar

Storm In A Jar

Topic: Science Careers

Empowerment Lesson Video: Science Careers

Supplies:

  • Glass jars
  • Food coloring dye
  • Water
  • Eyedroppers
  • Bowls and spoon
  • Shave cream

Video Discussion:

Tell students they will be watching the video Science Careers. Explain that the video presents role models talking about why a career in science is very desirable and fulfilling.

After watching the video together, invite students to share specific things they learned about the different science careers featured in the video and to reflect upon their observations e.g., ‘I liked knowing that a career in science can lead to many other career opportunities.'

Activity Instructions:

Prep

  1. Combine 1 teaspoon of glowing paint with 1/2 cup of very warm water in a bowl. Use one bowl for each color of "rain" and "lightning" that you wish to make.
  2. Stir until the food coloring dye is dissolved and the ingredients are combined.
  3. Add an eyedropper to each bowl and then let them sit to the side for a bit.
  4. Fill a jar 2/3 full with cool water, and form a "cloud" on top with the shave cream.

Activity

  1. Have students fill the eye droppers with the colors and then drip them onto the shaving cream cloud.
  2. The cloud will swell with colorful liquids, holding them inside. Once the cloud fills with enough moisture it will begin to ‘rain’.
  3. The colors will fall, swirling and mixing inside of the jar, creating a colorful storm!
