Video Discussion:

Ask students to turn and talk to a partner about what they know about the word “entrepreneur”.

After a minute of discussion, bring the class back together and ask students to share their ideas.

Work together to come to a class definition of the term entrepreneur (e.g., “A person who creates a new business to help solve a problem and is often seen as an innovator.”)

After watching the video Entrepreneurs, use some or all of the following questions to discuss the video content:

  • What are some reasons a person might want to start their own business instead of working for someone else?
  • How do you think being an entrepreneur can help someone make a difference in their community or the world?
  • Do you think being an entrepreneur would be fun? Why or why not?
  • What qualities do you think someone needs to be a successful entrepreneur? How do those qualities help them achieve their goals?

Activity Instructions:

Students will be creating a set of entrepreneur trading cards.

Entrepreneurs are people who start their own businesses by coming up with creative ideas to solve problems and help others.

Today, you’ll explore the journeys of different entrepreneurs by researching their stories. Then, you’ll design a set of trading cards to highlight their businesses and what makes them special.

  1. Use books and/or the internet to select and research at least four entrepreneurs. If you’re not sure where to start, consider researching one of the entrepreneurs from the video or take a look at the “List of Possible Entrepreneurs”.
  2. Cut apart your Entrepreneur Trading Cards on the double solid line. Each sheet contains four trading cards.
  3. Complete one Entrepreneur Trading Card per entrepreneur.
    • Use the information you learned about each entrepreneur to fill out the back of the trading card.
    • Draw a picture of the entrepreneur in the box.
    • Create a unique front for each trading card based on the business the entrepreneur started, the problem she solved, or her key traits and skills.
  4. Finally, take some time to look at your classmate’s trading cards and learn about the different entrepreneurs they researched. If you find a card you really like, feel free to trade with a classmate and expand your collection!
